Just a quick hour and half flight from Madrid, off the east coast of Spain, in the Mediterranean Sea, you find the island of Mallorca. It’s the largest of the four main Balearic Islands. Part of Spain, this beautiful island with turquoise waters, amazing coves, sandy beaches, and small picturesque towns was the perfect destination for a few days of sun and relaxation.

Our home-base was Cala Ferrera, which was a great location for us to explorer this side of the island. We stayed at the Barcelo Ponent Playa. The location of the resort was perfect, but the property could use an update. It’s basic, no frills hotel, but reasonability clean. The views from the balconies facing the cove were pretty spectacular!
The food and the local wines were wonderful. Our favorite restaurants were Playa Marina, Bon Sol and Mestral in Cala Ferrera. Can’t say enough good things about Pampoleria Es Pontas in Cala Santanyi; their food was fresh and cooked to perfection. Then there was the Seafood Paella at Cala Canta in Palma; only complaint would be for more of those fabulous shrimp!

On the way to Formentor Lighthouse, through the 13-mile twisty hair pin corners, with steep grades and high elevations, you come across wild goats, buses, recreational vehicles, cyclists and even runners. This drive is not for the faint of heart.
“A local legend has it that the parish priest and the local bus driver arrived at the Pearly Gates and only the driver was admitted to heaven. The reason? He had led far more people to pray.” Funny Stuff!!!
Upon arrival, we were rewarded with breathtaking views of the mediterranean.

We spent our last night in Palma. This was an opportunity to check out the town and its beautiful sandy beaches. Plus, we would be that much closer to the airport for our 6AM flight. We stayed at the wonderful UR Portofino. Small, but lovely property just a block from the main promenade. The rooms were small, but nicely appointed and the view from the balcony was amazing. They have a lovely rooftop bar; great view of Palma and the bay.
Four days in Mallorca went by too quick. This was just a taste of what this great island has to offer those that venture over. I think September was a perfect time to visit. While the weather wasn’t always perfect, it was wonderful to be able to see the island without the July and August crowds. See you soon Mallorca.
